Philosophy of Education

Children must have their basic needs met...

I believe that children need a safe, caring, and stimulating environment in order to grow and learn. Children’s basic needs must be met before learning can occur. This can be related to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.Every student has a story and has different struggles. It is important that I get to know my students and make that connection with them so that they feel safe and comfortable in my classroom.  As a teacher I will make sure my students needs are being met so that they can reach their full potentials.

Children learn from their environment…

I believe children learn from their environment. This may be at school, home, or the community. I feel it is important to give children authentic hands-on experiences to help them learn. This can be related to Vygotsky’s Social Development Theory. This method is based on the belief that the child’s environment will shape how they think and what they think about. My goal is to make that positive difference in a child’s life to show that they matter and are capable of great things. I want to give all students the opportunity to learn and succeed. Another important aspect of Vygotsky’s theory is the impact of culture. Our students cultures are important and must be acknowledged within the classroom. I am passionate about teaching culturally so that all my students have a voice and feel valued.

Children play an important role in the learning process...

I believe it is the teacher’s job to assist the students in learning but the children should be asking the questions and guiding their learning to what they want to learn about. In order for true learning to occur, children need to make it relevant to their lives and make those connections. Learning may be different for every child, so I think it is important that they are making choices in their learning. Teaching should be multimodel to ensure all students have a chance to learn and understand the material.

The teacher is the model…

I believe that it is important that I instill a love of learning in my students. As a teacher I will constantly learn and grow and it is important that I show my students that as well. I want my students to get excited about learning and realize that they have potential to make change in the world and make it a better place. I will strive to bring the best education possible to my students to help make them into individuals that will positively impact our community.
